What is Lyme?

Lyme disease (borreliosis) is tick-borne disease. “Lyme” or sometimes referred to as “Lymes” is spread to humans by the bite of an infected tick. Lyme ticks are hard-bodied “hard ticks.”

Lyme can also be spread from human to human. Early manifestations of Lyme include flu like symptoms for the first few weeks. Some of these symptoms from Lyme are: fever, headache, fatigue, depression and a characteristic skin rash. The skin rash that Lyme victims sometimes have it a red ring or something that looks like a bull’s eye around the site of the bite.

Not all Lyme victims have this red rash. It’s believed that someone who has Lyme in their body, upon their second bite will receive the red ring or “bull’s eye” rash.

Lyme can be treated somewhat successfully if caught early (typically within two weeks of the bite.)

Most Lyme victims never know they were bitten or do not recall ever being bitten by a tick. These Lyme victims develop Chronic Lyme Disease, a term given to Lyme victims who don’t get treatment immediately.

Lyme disease is caused by gram-negative spirochete bacteria from genus Borrelia. This Lyme bacteria can duplicate themselves rapidly and can hide from the body’s immune system by mimicking healthy cells.

Lyme can also change forms to elude the immune system or antibiotics. When Lyme is in “cyst” form it becomes very difficult to kill.

One of the best ways to defeat Lyme is to get treatment immediately if you suspect you have been bitten by a Lyme carrying tick.

The best prevention for Lyme is to cover up when outdoors and to always check yourself for ticks once indoors.
